As winter sweeps in, there’s nothing quite like wrapping your hands around a warm mug of cocoa to lift your spirits. While the classic hot cocoa is undeniably comforting, I’m here to elevate the experience by introducing a healthier twist ā the Peppermint Hot Cocoa. Packed with flavor and beneficial ingredients, this recipe not only satisfies your sweet tooth but also nourishes your body. See full details below;)
Jump to RecipeWhat do I need to make this healthier hot cocoa?
Well, I am so glad you asked;) This healthier peppermint hot cocoa is completely customizable to each individual’s unique dietary needs and preferences. These are the ingredients I use, but feel free to use any substitutions!
Ingredients:
- Oat or almond milk (I use a combo of oat milk and unsweetened almond milk, but any milk here works! However, the sweetness will depend on the sweetness of your milk)
- Unsweetened cocoa powder (I use Hershey’s Special Dark cocoa!)
- Pure maple syrup (adjust to taste)
- Pure vanilla extract
- Peppermint extract
- Optional toppings: whipped cream, candy canes, or marshmallows!
Is it hard to make my own cocoa?
Absolutely not! This recipe is SO easy, it’s hard to believe that all this time I’ve been making my cocoa using powdered mix and the microwave. Homemade cocoa tastes so much better and it’s so dang easy.
Instructions:
- Warm the Milk: In a small saucepan, heat the almond milk over medium heat until it’s warm but not boiling.
- Mix in the Cocoa: Whisk in the unsweetened cocoa powder, ensuring it’s fully dissolved into the milk.
- Sweeten It Up: Add the pure maple syrup and continue whisking until well combined. Adjust the sweetness to your liking.
- Flavor Explosion: Stir in the pure vanilla extract and peppermint extract. Be cautious with the peppermint extract ā a little goes a long way.
- Heat: Allow the mixture to to become steamy, fully heated through and well blended. Remove it from the heat.
- Top It Off: Pour your peppermint hot cocoa into your favorite mug and add optional toppings like whipped cream, crushed candy canes, or marshmallows for that extra touch of Christmas.
What makes it “healthier”?
Well, store bought cocoa mix typically involves much more refined sugar and is typically a more processed, less-chocolatey concentrate. I love a deep and rich chocolate flavor and this stovetop hot cocoa offers that richness without compromising nutrition! I have outlined a few of the health benefits of this version below;)
Health Benefits:
- Antioxidant-Rich Cocoa: Cocoa is packed with antioxidants, known for their potential health benefits, including heart health and improved mood.
- Dairy-Free: Opting for a plant-based milk alternative makes this peppermint hot cocoa suitable for those with lactose intolerance or following a vegan diet.
- Mindful Sweetening: Maple syrup adds a natural sweetness along with some essential minerals, making it a healthier alternative to refined sugar.
